A brief history
Indigenous tribes, including the Cahuilla and Chemehuevi, have long inhabited the area, relying on its resources for sustenance. During the 19th century, the park played a crucial role as a watering stop for miners, cowboys, and explorers travelling through the desert. In 1936, Joshua Tree was designated as a National Monument, eventually attaining National Park status in 1994. Today, it stands as a testament to the natural beauty and cultural significance of the Southwest, USA.
Three hours from Los Angeles or San Diego or only 45 minutes from Palm Springs lies this unique spot on earth. Despite the desert landscape, the park has many faces waiting to be explored by you. Two deserts run through the national park. On the south side is the Colorado Desert, which is characterised by grasslands and dunes. The west side of the park is part of the Mojave Desert, which features the iconic Joshua Trees and imposing granite rocks. It's a little cooler here due to the higher elevation.
Hikes of all levels
Joshua Tree National Park has numerous hiking trails of varying difficulty. For beginners, the Hidden Valley Nature Trail is particularly suitable: a circular walk of just under two kilometres through a beautiful valley, lined with impressive rock formations such as the Great Burrito. You can also have a wonderful picnic with your loved ones in this setting. For more advanced hikers, Wonderland of Rocks or Lost Palm Oasis offer the perfect challenge, and the challenging Ryan Mountain Trail rewards hikers with sweeping panoramas from the summit.

Unique, vertical rock formations
The oldest rocks in the park are over 1.7 billion years old and form the most bizarre shapes, such as Skull Rock, which is immediately recognisable as a skull at first glance. Other impressive rocks are the large Old Woman Rock or the gigantic Wonderland of Rocks. Joshua Tree National Park is a climber's paradise, boasting a plethora of colossal rock formations. Hidden Valley, known for its captivating rock-enclosed valley, offers fantastic bouldering opportunities. Jumbo Rocks and Skull Rock are famous for their unique formations, perfect for exploration and photography.

The park's name comes from the iconic Joshua Tree (Yucca brevifolia), a unique species found in abundance across the Mojave Desert. The Mojave Desert's higher elevation brings cooler temperatures, making it an ideal habitat for the majestic Joshua Trees, some of which are hundreds of years old.
The iconic cactus
Among the rocky terrain, vibrant cacti such as the teddy bear cholla and the beavertail cactus add splashes of colour to the arid landscape. Special desert vegetation can be marvelled at in the Cholla Cactus Garden, located in the Colorado Desert.
Choosing the right time to visit Joshua Tree can significantly impact your experience. In summer, for example, temperatures are high most of the time, which can make active exploration difficult.
Spring and autumn
For pleasant weather and fewer crowds, consider planning your trip during the shoulder seasons, in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, daytime temperatures are milder, ranging from 21 °C to 29 °C. It is therefore best to visit Joshua Tree National Park in autumn or spring, when the wildflowers are also in bloom. Birdwatchers will also delight in spotting golden eagles, ravens, and colourful migratory birds during the spring and autumn.
Winter
A visit in winter can also be a very special experience: In the cold season, you share the park with only a few visitors and can fully enjoy the vastness and silence of the terrain.
Magical times in Joshua Tree National Park

The high altitude, dry desert air and low light pollution provide the ideal conditions for a clear view of the stars and the Milky Way like no other place. As night draws to a close, another magical time begins in the park. When the sun rises above the horizon and bathes the area in a warm light, the park comes to life. At this cool time of day, the animals are also at their most active and can be observed particularly well then. As a visitor, you can explore the park at your leisure before the day-trippers arrive and marvel at the natural spectacle at viewpoints. We particularly recommend Ryan Mountain or Keys View, which overlooks the Coachella Valley.
Outdoor art
In addition to all the natural beauty, Joshua Tree National Park is also home to numerous outdoor artworks and installations. Visit Noah Purifoy's outdoor museum in the northwest of the park. Here you will find large-scale sculptures made from scrap metal and discarded objects, such as a toilet tower. The whole thing is also completely free.
