Greater Niagara

Best time to visit New York State?

Although the state can be visited all year round, the best time to visit really depends on what your preference is, as each season has its unique charm. To help you decide, we have come up with an intro to what each season offers:

Spring (April to June): The weather is generally mild, with temperatures around 20 °C as the state's natural beauty comes to life with blooming flowers and lush landscapes. A great season for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and exploring parks and gardens, this is a quieter time to visit with fewer tourists around making it attractive to those looking to explore without the large crowds.

Summer (June to August): The peak tourist season in New York State, especially in New York City as the weather is warm, and there's a buzz of activity. It's the ideal time for festivals, outdoor concerts, and enjoying the state's many beaches and lakes. Be prepared for larger crowds and higher accommodation prices in popular destinations.

Autumn (September to November): Arguably the best time to visit New York State for many travellers, the autumn foliage in upstate New York, especially in the Adirondacks and the Hudson Valley, is stunning. It's a prime time for hiking, apple picking, and enjoying the vibrant colours of the changing leaves. The weather is pleasant, and the crowds are thinner compared to summer.

Winter (December to February): If you enjoy winter sports, New York State offers fantastic skiing and snowboarding opportunities in the Catskills, Adirondacks, and other regions. Winter also brings holiday festivities and ice skating in New York City. However, it can be quite cold, especially upstate, so be prepared for chilly temperatures.
