Welcome to Lake Powell! This artificially created water reservoir is a very popular stop for those looking to cool off or participate in water sports. It provides a true reprieve from the surrounding desert, and offers stunning views of the carved red sandstone.
Lake Powell is a section of the Colorado River in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. At 186 miles long, it's made up of endless and beautiful scenery, 96 canyons, inviting warm water to swim in and sail on, and lots of sunshine.
Lake Powell is located in Glen Canyon, an area which historians believe has been inhabited for nearly 9,000 years. Lake Powell is a man made reservoir that was made through the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam, which flooded the Colorado River waters into Glen Canyon in 1963.
The construction of a dam in this location was a controversial decision, and drastically altered the landscape of both Arizona and Utah, as the sandstone gorges that the dam is named for are now submerged. The lake is now divided up into two main sections: South Lake Powell in Arizona, and North Lake Powell in Utah.
South Lake Powell
This is where you will find the Glen Canyon Dam, which is open year-round. The south side is ideal for mountain biking, hiking and even horseback riding. While here, you should also check out the Glen Canyon Conservancy and John Wesley Powell Memorial Museum.
North Lake Powell
On the Utah side of the lake, you can discover sandstone rock formations that have been carved by both water and wind over millions of years. In addition, Bullfrog, Utah is home to many marinas that are great bases for sailing and kayaking through the rock formations.
Rainbow Bridge
Tucked away in the mesmerizing landscapes of Lake Powell, Rainbow Bridge stands as one of the world's largest natural bridges, boasting awe-inspiring beauty and geological significance. Accessible only by boat or a challenging hike, witnessing this majestic wonder is a rewarding experience for adventurous travellers.
Page, Arizona
While in the area, make time to explore the town of Page, Arizona, the gateway to Lake Powell. Near the south side of Lake Powell and just to the north, Page offers visitors many options for activities and sights and is an excellent home base for exploring other destinations in Arizona. You can easily visit the stunning Horseshoe Bend, or embark on a hike to nearby destinations such as Rainbow Bridge National Monument.
Bullfrog, Utah
Nestled on the shores of Lake Powell, Bullfrog, Utah, is a hidden gem for those seeking aquatic adventures and stunning desert landscapes. With its crystal-clear waters and towering sandstone cliffs, Lake Powell offers endless opportunities for boating, fishing, and kayaking. While here, don't miss the breathtaking vistas from Alstrom Point or the thrilling hike through the colourful slot canyons of Bullfrog Bay.
Grand Canyon National Park
Located only two hours away, the Grand Canyon is an absolute must-see while in Arizona. This geological masterpiece was carved by the Colorado River through the striking red sandstone rock. To best see and experience the park, take a hike along the rim trails or venture into the canyon itself for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands, is a must-visit destination for photographers and nature lovers. While not directly on Lake Powell, Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend are both easily accessible destinations from Page, Arizona. A four-hour drive away, Antelope Canyon's surreal sandstone formations, illuminated by radiant light beams, create a photographer's paradise.
And Horseshoe Bend, also a four-hour drive away, is a majestic and dramatic bend of the Colorado River basin. It provides visitors with stunning vistas from the edge of towering cliffs, perfect for capturing breathtaking sunset views.

Lake Powell offers a playground for boating, fishing, swimming, and water sports. To best explore the hidden coves and towering red rock cliffs that line the lake's shores, you can rent a kayak or paddleboard.

Avid hikers can embark on a strenuous 14-mile round-trip trek from the nearest trailhead to admire the Golden Bridge.
