History of the park

Before Denali became a national park, the area was home to indigenous Athabaskan people who thrived in this challenging environment. The park's name, "Denali," is derived from the Athabaskan word meaning "the high one," aptly capturing the essence of this awe-inspiring destination.

The gold rush in the late 19th century brought prospectors to the region, but it wasn't until 1917 that Charles Sheldon, a conservationist, began advocating for the area's protection. In 1980, the park was expanded and designated as Denali National Park and Preserve, ensuring the preservation of its unique ecosystems and wildlife.
